American Standard Fence Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
American Standard fence installation in Los Angeles typically runs $4,130 – $10,620 for a complete new install, and our crews stock American Standard-compatible posts, rails, and panels on the truck for same-week scheduling. Most Los Angeles homeowners don’t discover a fence problem until a post leans, a gate stops latching, or the bottom rail starts pulling away from the concrete. We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with American Standard, but we work with their product lines every week and know exactly which fasteners and post depths hold up in Los Angeles soil conditions.
What you’re dealing with is almost never the panel itself. It’s what’s under it. In Los Angeles, we see three failure patterns repeat across every neighborhood from Encino to Eagle Rock: posts set too shallow for our expanding clay soil, rusted galvanized hardware where the rail meets the post, and gate hinges that were never sized for the weight of a solid American Standard gate panel. Curtis Lane, who runs Bradford Remodeling, has torn out enough failed fence lines across the Basin to tell you before we even dig: the post that’s leaning today was set wrong the day it went in.
Which American Standard Models This Applies To

American Standard’s residential fence lineup breaks into two families: their vinyl privacy series and their aluminum ornamental series. The vinyl lines (usually marked on the panel’s bottom rail with an embossed model number starting “ASV”) use a routed post-and-rail system where panels slide into U-channels, not face-mounted brackets. That’s the first compatibility gotcha: if your old fence used face-mount brackets and you’re switching to American Standard vinyl, the post spacing has to be recalculated, because American Standard panels are sized to specific center-to-center post measurements, not field-cut to fit.
The aluminum series is simpler on paper: posts, rails, and pickets bolt together with self-tapping screws and hidden brackets. But the weak point is the bracket. American Standard’s aluminum gates ship with a standard hinge set rated for panels up to 60 pounds. A double-wide gate panel with an ornamental arch runs closer to 85 – 90 pounds. In Los Angeles, where gates get cycled twice a day for parking and trash access, that under-spec’d hinge set is the most common American Standard failure we replace. Always check the hinge pin diameter: ½-inch pins handle lightweight gates; heavy panels need ⅝-inch or you’ll be re-hanging the gate every spring.
For OEM versus aftermarket: American Standard OEM rails and posts are worth the price when color match matters, because their vinyl is UV-stabilized to a specific whiteness. Aftermarket vinyl from a different manufacturer yellows differently under Los Angeles sun, and six months later you can spot the patch panel from the street. For hardware (hinges, latches, post caps), we stock quality aftermarket equivalents in 316 stainless or powder-coated aluminum that outlast the original zinc-plated parts at roughly the same installed cost.

Signs Your American Standard Fence Installation Is Failing
- Post leaning more than 5 degrees in any direction. Cause: original post depth was under 24 inches, or the concrete collar cracked from soil movement. Los Angeles clay expands in the winter rains and contracts in the summer drought; a shallow post can’t ride that cycle without walking.
- Bottom rail pulling away from the post, especially after rain. Cause: the U-channel route surfaces are trapping water against the post. American Standard vinyl panels drain through weep holes at the base; if those are blocked or the rail was set tight against the post with no drainage gap, the hardware rusts from the inside out.
- Gate dragging on the latch side but fine on the hinge side. Cause: hinge pin wear. The panel’s weight has been carried by the hinge screws instead of the post brackets. If you lift the gate and feel play at the hinge plate, the screws are stripped and the fix is a post reinforcement, not another screw.
- White vinyl panels yellowing unevenly, especially on the south-facing run. Cause: someone patched with non-UV-stabilized material, or the original panel was from a different production lot. American Standard’s UV inhibitors degrade at different rates by batch; a mismatched panel shows it.
- Cracked post at ground level with staining. Cause: the post was set directly into concrete without a drainage base. Water pools inside the post, freezes on cold winter nights, and expands. American Standard posts need a gravel base or the post jacket cracks within a few seasons.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full American Standard vinyl fence installation in Los Angeles runs $4,130 – $10,620 depending on linear footage, gate count, and whether we’re pulling old posts or starting fresh. A partial repair (replacing a failed section or re-hanging a gate) usually falls between $900 and $2,800. The spread comes from three things: the number of gates, whether the existing post footings can be reused, and access. A 60-foot backyard in Sherman Oaks with a side gate and two access paths prices differently than the same run in Palmdale where the post auger can sit in the open.
Every Bradford Remodeling price is written before work starts, and it includes line-item parts and labor, not a bundled round number. That’s The Garrison Standard: a written scope, a written price, and a written guarantee before a single auger turns. If the fence fails within 365 days of completion, the Done Right Promise means we come back and correct it at no charge. No change orders, no re-pricing at the door.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check your own fence: look for gaps between the rail and post, test the gate play, and mark any post that leans with a level. But pulling and resetting a post is where DIY goes wrong. The concrete collar around an American Standard vinyl post is usually a 12 – 18 inch diameter column set 24 – 36 inches deep. Digging that out by hand in Los Angeles clay is a two-person job with a post auger, and if you don’t get the new post plumb in both planes, your gate will bind and the post load will crack the new collar within a year. We’ve also seen homeowners wire a leaning post to a tree or stake it with rebar, which works until the first Santa Ana wind event and then you have a post leaning in a new direction.
If you’re re-hanging a gate or replacing one or two failed posts, that’s a half-day job for us and most of that time is concrete curing. Call (903) 568-7222 and we’ll give you a straight number over the phone and a written line-item price before work starts. Straight number, real scope, no surprises at the punch list.
FAQs

Vinyl panels from American Standard typically last 20 – 30 years in Los Angeles before UV embrittlement shows, but the hardware (hinges, latches, post brackets) usually fails at 8 – 12 years. We see the gate hardware go before the panels every time. Call (903) 568-7222 and we’ll tell you what’s worth replacing versus what still has life in it.
A leaning post can be straightened and re-set if the post itself is uncracked and the concrete collar is intact. If the post is cracked at grade or the collar has shifted, replacement is cheaper than patching, because the patched post will fail again within two seasons of Los Angeles’s wet-dry cycle. We’ll assess it and tell you which path makes sense before any work starts.
Most single-post replacements are done in a half day including concrete set time. A full 60-foot American Standard fence run with two gates is a two-day job, plus one day for the post concrete to cure before gate hardware goes on. We schedule the work and you’ll have a written timeline before we start.
We stock the most common American Standard vinyl U-channel rails, post caps, heavy-duty gate hinges, and powder-coated aluminum brackets. If your repair needs a matched panel or a specific color lot, we order from American Standard’s distributor with a one-week lead time and install on arrival. You’ll know the parts cost before we order anything.
