CGI Fence Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

CGI fence installation in Los Angeles typically runs $4,130 to $10,620 installed, depending on linear footage, post condition, and whether we’re setting new footings or working with existing ones. We stock CGI-compatible panels, posts, and hardware on our trucks, so most swaps happen in one visit. Most owners discover the issue the hard way: a post leaning after a Santa Ana wind event, a gate sagging past the latch, or a panel that’s pulling free at the rails.

In Los Angeles, CGI fencing takes specific abuse. The dry-baked sun off the 405 corridor breaks down powder coating faster than coastal fog ever will. In the Crenshaw district where Curtis Lane grew up, and out through the Basin, soil shifts with every wet winter and dry summer cycle. That movement is what loosens post footings and torques panels over time. We see it on a weekly basis. The fix is rarely just swapping one part. It’s getting the post set right, the rails true, and the gate re-hung so it actually clears the latch.

Which CGI Fence Models This Applies To

CGI makes several fence lines, and the compatibility quirks matter. The two most common in Los Angeles residential work are the CGI Ornamental steel series and the CGI Estate aluminum line. They look similar from the street but do not share hardware. Ornamental uses heavier gauge steel posts with welded brackets. Estate uses thinner aluminum with a slip-fit channel system. Mixing the two means a panel that won’t seat or a gate that binds on the hinge side.

To identify what you have, check the post cap or the top rail. CGI stamps a model code near the top of the post on most series, usually a two- or three-letter prefix before the size. If the stamp has worn off, measure the post dimensions and the picket spacing. Ornamental posts run 2-1/2 inches square at 7 gauge. Estate posts sit closer to 2 inches square with thinner walls. If you’re replacing a gate frame, count the hinges. Estate gates hang on two; Ornamental gates over 6 feet need three.

We recommend OEM CGI panels when the fence line is visible from the street. The color match is exact, and the powder coat is rated for our UV exposure. For interior runs, a quality aftermarket panel from a domestic supplier can save 15 to 20 percent, but we’ll always show you the spec sheet side by side before you commit. We’re independent of CGI, which means we’re not obligated to sell you one path over the other. We are obligated, by our own standard, to tell you which one holds up.

One more Los Angeles-specific note: if your fence is within 15 feet of the coast, the salt air will eat uncoated steel hardware in under three years. We specify stainless fasteners and brackets on every coastal job. It costs slightly more up front and saves you a rust repair inside the warranty window.

Signs Your CGI Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Post lean of more than five degrees. In LA’s expansive soils, a post that leans toward the side with the gate almost always means the footing is undersized or the concrete has cracked below grade. Re-setting with a proper 2-foot-plus depth and gravel drain is the real fix; shimming the post is a temporary patch.
  • Gate dragging or failing to latch. When a double drive gate starts to drop on the hinge side, the load is no longer transferring to the post correctly. It could be a worn hinge pin, but just as often the post itself has moved. Forcing the latch masks the problem until the hinge tears out.
  • Rail pull-out at the panel corners. This is the most common failure we see on the Ornamental series. The rail screws work loose as panels expand and contract through hot summers, and once play starts, the panel flexes in the wind and the fastener holes wallow out. Re-tapping oversized threads buys a season; re-welding or bracket replacement is the permanent repair.
  • Powder coat flaking in sheets, not spots. Spot scarring is normal over time. But when the coating lifts in wide sections, it usually means the prep was bad from the factory or an aggressive chemical (pool chlorine splash is a big one in LA backyards) sat on the metal. Once the substrate is exposed, rust follows within two winters.
  • Bottom rail buried by soil or grass. Rake your eye along the bottom rail. If landscaping has crept up onto the frame, moisture sits against the metal and rusts it from the bottom edge up. This is a maintenance issue as much as a material issue, and it shortens panel life dramatically.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled staircase with wood treads and a slim metal railing

CGI fence installation in Los Angeles runs $4,130 to $10,620 for a typical residential scope. That covers tear-out of the failed section, new posts set in concrete where required, panel and gate mounting, and site cleanup. On the low end, you’re looking at a single panel swap or a gate re-hang with existing sound posts. The high end reflects a longer run with multiple posts being re-set, new hardware throughout, and potentially re-working a sagging drive gate.

What drives the number most is post condition. If we can reuse the existing posts and they’re plumb and solid, labor drops considerably. If the posts have rusted at the base or cracked at the footing, that means excavation, new concrete, and cure time before the panel goes back. The second biggest factor is coastal proximity, because we spec stainless hardware within the salt zone. Every portion of the bid is line-itemed. You’ll see parts, hardware, concrete, labor, and haul-away listed separately, so there’s no mystery in the total.

The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to every CGI fence installation we do. If the post shifts, the gate sags, or the panel comes loose within one year of completion, we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s in writing before the first post hole is dug.

DIY or Call Us?

There are things an owner in Los Angeles can safely check. You can tighten a hinge screw that’s backed out. You can clear soil away from the bottom rail so it dries. You can look at the post caps and check for cracking at the welds. None of that requires more than basic hand tools and a good eye.

What you should not do is attempt to re-set a leaning post or re-hang a heavy double gate by yourself. A 7-foot CGI steel panel under tension is dangerous when it comes free mid-removal. Gates especially store energy in the frame, and when a hinge lets go the wrong way, it takes fingers with it. This is one of those jobs where a second set of hands and the right bracing matter. If the post is moving, the footing has failed, and no amount of shims fixes that. Call us at (903) 568-7222 and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a repair or a re-set. The estimate is free, and the number you get is the number you’ll pay.
