Ameristar Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Ameristar driveway pavers and paver replacements in Los Angeles typically run $8,260 to $21,240 installed, depending on the square footage, base condition, and which Ameristar line you’re matching. We stock Ameristar-compatible pavers and the base materials that go under them, and we can usually have a crew out to evaluate your failed section within a few days.
Most Los Angeles homeowners discover a paver problem after a rain. The low corner of the driveway backs up with water, or a section sinks an inch, or a few pavers crack along the edge where tires cut the corner. Then you look closer and realize the issue isn’t the paver itself – it’s what’s underneath it. That’s where the expensive part usually is. Bradford Remodeling is an independent contractor and not affiliated with Ameristar, but we spec and install their paver lines because they hold up to Southern California sun without fading like the cheaper big-box pavers do.
Quick summary:
- Installed Ameristar paver driveway: $8,260-$21,240 in Los Angeles, depending on prep and square footage
- OEM Ameristar pavers: we match the line, not just the color
- Most common failure: base settling, not the paver itself
- Written price before any work starts, every time
Which Ameristar Models This Applies To

Ameristar runs a few distinct paver and paving stone lines, and they are not interchangeable. The three you’ll see most in Los Angeles driveways are the Ameristar StoneMason series (tumbled, old-world edge), the Ameristar EnduraStone line (denser, smoother face, often used for driveways with heavy traffic), and the Ameristar PermaPave line (higher compressive strength, the one we recommend for steep Los Angeles hillside drives where the grade puts real weight on the surface).
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit: Ameristar changed their mold dimensions on the EnduraStone line around 2018. A paver from a 2017 pallet will not seat flush next to a 2023 paver of the same “color.” The dimensions are off by roughly 1/16 inch, which sounds like nothing until you have fifty of them laid and the joints start walking. If you have leftover pavers from the original install, check the bottom face for a four-digit mold code. If there’s no code, it’s pre-2018. If you’re not sure, bring us a photo of the bottom, and we’ll tell you before ordering anything.
For OEM versus aftermarket: with Ameristar driveways, we lean OEM for anything visible. The color consistency across Ameristar’s batch process is better than the generics, and a driveway is the most visible surface on the property. Aftermarket base materials – crushed aggregate, bedding sand, edge restraint – those are manufacturer-agnostic and that’s where we control cost without cutting corners.

Signs Your Ameristar Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
Here’s what we see in Los Angeles, drive by drive:
- Rutting or tire-track depressions. This is base failure. The pavers are fine, but the compacted material underneath has shifted or dissolved. In Los Angeles clay soil, this is common where drainage pools against the driveway edge. The fix is removing the pavers, re-compacting the base, and re-laying the same pavers, not replacing them.
- Pavers cracking along the first 3 feet of the driveway apron. That’s the city right-of-way zone, and the issue is usually a thin base or a tree root underneath. The apron takes garbage-truck weight, which a patio never sees. We see this in Mid-Wilshire and Leimert Park where street trees are 60 years old and roots have pushed up under the concrete lip.
- Sand washing out of the joints after rain. If you can see channels in the joints, water is running across the surface instead of off it. You need new polymeric sand and ideally a grade correction so the water doesn’t channel. Re-sanding alone is a temporary fix if the grade is wrong.
- Edge pavers spreading at the driveway perimeter. Edge restraint failed. The pavers are walking outward. You can usually catch this before it spreads past six inches. If the edge has already bloomed a foot, the restraint is gone and the whole edge needs to be pulled and re-set.
- White haze or efflorescence that won’t scrub off. This is salt migration from moisture moving through the paver. It’s common in coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods like Playa del Rey where air moisture is constant. It’s cosmetic but indicates water is sitting in the paver instead of draining away.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Ameristar paver driveway in Los Angeles runs $8,260 to $21,240 installed. That range depends on three things: square footage (most Los Angeles driveways run 400-900 square feet), base condition (new compacted base costs more than reusing an existing solid base), and which Ameristar line you choose (StoneMason runs on the lower end, PermaPave on the upper).
Here’s the line-item reality:
- Paver material: $4-$9 per square foot depending on line
- Base prep (excavate, compact, aggregate): $3-$6 per square foot
- Labor (lay, cut, edge, sand): $5-$10 per square foot
- Demo and haul of old surface: $1.50-$3 per square foot if replacing
We give a written price before any work starts, and that price doesn’t move at the door. If we find something unexpected during excavation – a buried stump, a broken irrigation line, a city sewer cleanout someone covered with pavers – we photograph it, explain what it changes, and give you a revised written number before proceeding. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the entire install: if anything we did fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing, in your hand, at close of job.

What you can do safely: watch where water pools after rain, check for edge spread, clean the joints with a shop vac and re-sand small areas. That’s maintenance, and it’s smart to handle it yourself.
What goes wrong: lifting a sunken section without diagnosing why it sank. You can re-level 30 square feet by hand, and two winters later it sinks again because the base wasn’t the original problem – a broken drain line was. In Los Angeles, the two biggest hidden problems are clay soil shifting after heavy rain years and irrigation lines leaking under the driveway. We don’t want you buying $400 in polymeric sand to fix a $1,200 drainage problem. If you’re pulling more than a dozen pavers, call (903) 568-7222 and let us look at the whole driveway before you spend your weekend on it.
And if you’re near the coast, keep in mind: pavers are heavy, and full pallet weight runs about 3,000 pounds. That’s not a trunk-load from the home center. We deliver and stage the material as part of the job.
FAQs

A properly installed Ameristar paver driveway in Los Angeles lasts 25 to 40 years, with the base being the limiting factor more than the paver itself. The UV-stable color on OEM Ameristar lines holds up well here, but the base underneath will shift on expansive clay soil over time, which is why a re-level at 15-20 years is not unusual. Call (903) 568-7222 if you want us to evaluate whether your driveway needs a touch-up or a full re-base.
A single cracked paver can be replaced without touching the rest of the driveway, as long as it’s not a pre-2018 EnduraStone mold sitting next to newer pavers. We cut it out, seat the replacement, and match the sand. If the cracking is structural and repeats in the same area, the paver isn’t the problem – the base is. Call (903) 568-7222 and we’ll tell you which one you’re dealing with.
A standard single-car Ameristar driveway in Los Angeles takes 4 to 7 working days from excavation to final sanding, depending on access and weather. Steep hillside driveways or significant base reconstruction add time. Before any work starts, you get a written scope with the day count and the material list.
We stock common Ameristar StoneMason and EnduraStone colors in our Los Angeles yard for small repairs but order full-pallet quantities for new driveway installs to guarantee batch consistency. If you need to match an existing driveway, bring us a photo of a paver with the mold code visible, and we’ll confirm the exact line and era before ordering.
