Barrette Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Barrette-compatible driveway edging, paver restraints, and polymeric sand systems across Los Angeles, with most replacements running $295 – $825 for sealing and $4,130 – $12,980 for a full paver patio or driveway edge rebuild. If your Barrette paver edging has pulled loose, cracked, or shifted out of alignment, that’s the failure most Los Angeles homeowners call us about first. The usual story: a section of paver restraint lifts after a hard rain, the sand washes out, and within a season the pavers start to wander.
Barrette makes the structural backbone of a paver installation: the edge restraints, the sand, the underlayment. When those fail, the pavers themselves aren’t far behind. Bradford Remodeling is an independent contractor, not affiliated with Barrette, but we work with their product line daily and know which generations of their edging hold up in Los Angeles soil and which ones don’t.
Which Barrette Models This Applies To

Barrette’s paver accessory line splits into two main product families: their standard aluminum and plastic landscape edging (sold under the Barrette Outdoor Living label) and their heavier paver restraint systems meant for driveways and parking areas. The plastic edging works for garden beds and walkway borders. It is not rated for vehicle load. If someone installed the lighter product on a driveway apron, that’s your compatibility gotcha right there, and we see it across Los Angeles regularly.
For driveways, the correct Barrette product is their heavy-gauge aluminum or steel edging with a minimum 1/8-inch profile thickness. Anything thinner will bend under the lateral pressure of a car turning. Check the top edge of your edging: Barrette stamps their heavier product lines with a product code, usually a letter followed by four digits like B-2400 or B-3600. If you can’t find a stamp, measure the thickness with a caliper or a quarter. A quarter is roughly 1/16 inch thick. If your edging is the same thickness or less, it’s the decorative product, not the load-bearing restraint. Aftermarket equivalents exist, but for driveway applications under the Los Angeles sun, we recommend staying with Barrette OEM or a matched aluminum replacement. The UV stabilizers in the cheaper aftermarket plastics degrade noticeably within two to three years here.

Signs Your Barrette Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Edging has pulled away from the pavers by more than half an inch. This means the spikes have worked loose or the substrate under the edging has eroded. Once restraint fails, paver creep starts within months.
- Sand is washing out between joints after rain. Los Angeles gets concentrated downpours rather than steady drizzle, and that flash water is hard on joint sand. If you see sand fanning out onto the sidewalk, the polymeric bond has broken and water is now getting under the pavers.
- Pavers rock or tilt when you step on them. Rocking means the base has shifted, usually because the edge restraint stopped holding and let the whole field move. The tilt is the first visible symptom; the base failure is the actual problem.
- You can see daylight under the edging where it meets the concrete or soil. The edging should sit tight against the substrate. A visible gap is a direct path for water and roots to undermine the installation.
- Rust or white corrosion powder on aluminum edging near the coast. Salt air in Los Angeles neighborhoods west of the 405 accelerates corrosion on uncoated aluminum. The edging can still function for years, but the corrosion tells you it’s time to inspect the spike points before they fail quietly.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Los Angeles, Barrette paver restraint and edging replacement runs $1,180 – $3,540 for a typical 40 to 60 linear foot section, including removal of the failed product, substrate re-compaction, new spikes every 18 inches, and re-setting of the affected pavers. Full paver driveway restoration with new edging, re-grading, and polymeric sand runs $8,260 – $21,240 depending on square footage and whether the base layer needs rebuilding. Sealing alone runs $295 – $825.
What changes the price is the substrate. If the original installer ran base material under the edging, the fix is straightforward. If they laid edging directly on soil, we’re digging out and compacting a proper base, which adds labor. Every Bradford Remodeling estimate includes a written line-item price before work starts, so you’ll see exactly where the money goes. All completed work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the edging or any part of the repair fails within a year, we come back and correct it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect the edging and identify the product code without touching a tool. You can also sweep out loose joint sand and note where the pavers have shifted, which helps us give you an accurate phone estimate. What you should not do is pull up edging and attempt to re-spike it on a driveway. Driveway systems hold lateral force from a 4,000-pound vehicle. Improper re-spiking just means the edging fails again, and by then the pavers may have shifted enough to require a full field reset.
The other failure point on driveway pavers is the base. If you see standing water or soft spots after rain, the fix isn’t new sand on top. It’s excavation and re-compaction underneath. That’s the job for a crew that understands Los Angeles soil, which ranges from hard-packed clay in the Valley to sand near the coast. FAQs

In Los Angeles, properly installed Barrette aluminum driveway edging lasts 15 to 20 years before the spikes or substrate typically need attention. Plastic edging, if it was used on a driveway, fails within 3 to 5 years because it can’t handle vehicle load or sustained UV exposure. If yours failed early, check whether the product is actually rated for driveway use before replacing it like-for-like. Call (903) 568-7222 and we’ll help you identify what’s in the ground.
In many cases, yes. A section that has simply pulled loose can often be re-spiked and compacted without replacing the material, as long as the edging itself isn’t bent or corroded at the spike points. If the edging has warped or the spikes have torn through, replacement is the honest fix. We’ll tell you which one you need before any work starts, and the written estimate will reflect that decision.
A typical 40 to 60 linear foot edging replacement with paver reset in Los Angeles takes one day for the removal, compaction, and re-spike work, plus a second day if the base material needs to be brought in and re-graded. Polymeric sand activation adds 24 hours of cure time before you can drive on it. Wet weather will stretch the schedule, which we’ll flag in the written timeline.
We keep common Barrette edging profiles, heavy-duty spikes, and paver sand on our trucks for most Los Angeles calls. If your job needs a specific product code or a heavier profile, we order it and schedule the work once it’s in hand. We also stock driveway and paver accessories from Belgard, plus cabinet and surfacing lines like KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for the interior work we do most often.
No. The price on your written estimate is the price you pay unless you approve a change in writing first. Bradford Remodeling runs on flat-rate bids that don’t creep. Straight number, real scope, no surprises at the punch list. If we find a problem under the pavers we couldn’t see during the walkthrough, we stop, show you the issue, and give you a written change order before touching it.
