Boral Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Boral bathroom remodeling in Los Angeles typically runs $10,620 to $33,040 installed, depending on whether you’re replacing a failed substrate, reworking a wet wall, or doing a full gut-and-rebuild. We stock Boral-compatible trim, substrate panels, and accessories on the truck, and most single-part replacements are done in one visit. What usually brings a homeowner to this page is a soft spot in the wall behind the tile, a cracked corner bead, or a Boral panel that has started to swell at the base after years of shower steam and hard water.
If you’ve got a Boral product in your Los Angeles bathroom and something has failed, you need to know exactly what you’re looking at, what it costs, and whether it’s a repair or a rebuild. That’s what this page is for. We’re Bradford Remodeling, and we’re an independent Los Angeles contractor, not a Boral dealer or affiliate. Curtis Lane runs our operation, and we write this the same way we’d tell you standing in your bathroom: straight number, real scope, no surprises at the punch list.
Which Boral Models This Applies To

Boral makes a range of bathroom building products, but most homeowners in Los Angeles encounter them as either Boral tile backer board, Boral trim and molding, or Boral exterior siding that happens to wrap into a bathroom addition. The compatibility question matters because Boral’s cementitious panels come in different thicknesses, typically 1/4-inch, 1/2-inch, and 5/8-inch, and they are not interchangeable without changing your tile reveal or your transition planes.
Here’s the gotcha we see most often: Boral backer board is not the same as standard cement board. Boral uses a specific core formulation that is lighter and easier to score, but it also has different screw-holding characteristics. If a previous job used drywall screws instead of the specified corrosion-resistant screws, the panels will eventually loosen behind the tile. When we open up a failed wall, that’s the number one thing we find. We can identify the right Boral panel by thickness, edge profile, and the original installation date, which narrows down the product generation. For the trim, Boral’s cellular PVC and poly-ash lines look identical from ten feet away, but they cut and fasten differently. We’d rather match the part correctly the first time than guess.

Signs Your Boral Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout cracking in vertical lines where the wall meets the tub or shower pan. This usually means the Boral substrate behind the tile has absorbed moisture and is flexing. The panel swells, the grout can’t take the movement, and the crack shows up at the stress point.
- A soft or spongy feel when you press on the lower wall. That’s water intrusion into the Boral panel itself. By the time you feel it with your hand, the damage extends further than the soft spot, and the repair is usually a panel replacement, not a patch.
- Baseboard or shoe molding pulling away from the floor. In Los Angeles bathrooms, this often traces back to Boral’s substrate wicking water up from a failed shower pan or a leaking toilet flange. The panel swells at the bottom edge and pushes the trim off.
- Efflorescence, that white chalky powder, bleeding through the paint on Boral trim. That means water is moving through the material and carrying minerals out. It’s not a cosmetic issue. The water entry point is still active, and the freeze-thaw cycles we don’t even think about in Los Angeles are still enough to chip and spall the surface over time.
- Musty odor that doesn’t clear with ventilation. When Boral panels stay wet behind tile, mold grows in the cavity. The panel might look fine from the front. The smell is the first reliable sign, and it’s the one you should not wait on.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

The installed range for Boral bathroom remodeling work in Los Angeles is $10,620 to $33,040. The lower end covers a partial tear-out, substrate replacement, and re-tiling of one wet wall. The upper end covers a full bathroom gut, new Boral panel throughout, waterproofing membrane, tile, fixtures, and the structural work that comes up when we open the walls and find what’s really in there.
What drives the price inside that range: the square footage of Boral panel being replaced, whether the shower pan needs redoing, whether any framing behind the panel has rotted, and which tile or fixture line you spec. We use Kohler and Moen fixtures when you want them, and we document the materials on the written quote. Every job gets a written price before any work starts, no numbers that move at the door. That price covers the Boral-compatible materials, our labor, the debris haul-off, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the work fails within a year, we come back and correct it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check the seams, look for cracked grout, run your hand along the base of the wall, and take photos of any label still visible on the Boral panel. That information helps us give you a tighter quote before we come out. What you should not do is cut into the panel to see how far the damage goes. Wet Boral substrate often hides mold, and cutting without proper containment spreads spores through the bathroom and into the rest of the house. We wear respirators, seal the work area, and run negative air when the job calls for it.
The same goes for pulling a failed shower pan or disturbing plumbing. If the P-trap or the drain body is cracked, you won’t know until the water damage has already started. We sequence demo-to-drywall so the bathroom comes back together fast and the site is left clean at the end of every day. If you’re seeing any of the failure signs above, call us at (903) 568-7222 and we’ll put eyes on it.
FAQs

Properly installed Boral backer board should last 30 to 50 years in a Los Angeles bathroom, but Los Angeles hard water and poor ventilation can shorten that to 15 to 20 years if the panel stays wet. The failure almost always starts at a seam, a fastener, or the pan connection, not in the middle of the panel. Call (903) 568-7222 if you suspect yours has hit the end of its life.
Rarely. Once water has intruded into the core of a Boral panel, the structural integrity is compromised and patching leaves a seam that will fail again. The honest fix is a panel replacement. Call (903) 568-7222 and we’ll tell you which one you need and what it costs.
A single wet wall replacement with Boral panel typically takes two to three working days. A full bathroom remodel runs one to three weeks depending on tile, fixtures, and what we find behind the walls. We’ll put the schedule in writing with the price, and we’ll tell you if the scope changes before it changes. Call (903) 568-7222 to get your project on the schedule.
We keep the most common Boral panel thicknesses and trim profiles on the truck in Los Angeles, and we also carry compatible brands like KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone when your remodel includes cabinetry or surfaces. If your part is a less common Boral generation, we order it and you’ll know the lead time before we start. Call (903) 568-7222 for a free estimate.
