Schluter Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Schluter driveway and paver systems in Los Angeles typically run $8,260 to $21,240 installed, depending on square footage, substrate condition, and paver selection. We stock Schluter-compatible drainage membranes, edge restraints, and uncoupling layers for paver applications, and most part swaps happen same-day once we confirm what’s on site. The usual first sign of trouble is a paver that’s drifted, a sand joint that won’t hold, or water pooling against a foundation instead of running to the drain.
What most Los Angeles homeowners discover is that the “paver failure” isn’t the paver at all. It’s the Schluter layer underneath: the drainage mat, the edge profile, or the jointing compound has given out, and the surface is just showing the symptom. You see a sunken corner by the garage apron or a line of pavers pulling away from the curb, and the real problem is water has found a path under the system. That’s the part we replace.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

For driveway and paver applications, we work with the Schluter TROBA, TROBA-PLUS, and DITRA-DRAIN product lines. These aren’t interchangeable, and that’s where most ordering mistakes happen. TROBA is a lightweight drainage mat rated for pedestrian and light vehicle loads. TROBA-PLUS is the heavier gauge version, built for residential driveways with standard passenger vehicles. DITRA-DRAIN combines the uncoupling function with an integrated drainage plane, and it’s the one we spec when a driveway abuts a foundation wall or a paver patio runs against a slab edge.
To identify what you have, look for the printed product code on any exposed edge. If the edge is buried, the mat thickness tells the story: TROBA runs about 8mm, TROBA-PLUS about 11mm, DITRA-DRAIN about 10mm with a visible fabric backing on one side. For OEM versus aftermarket, Schluter’s own profiles and mats are dimensionally consistent and we default to them because the manufacturer’s load ratings are documented. A generic drainage mat from a supply house might save $40 on a roll, but when it compresses under a 5,000-pound vehicle, the pavers above it fail. For Schluter-specific driveway work, we don’t gamble on substitute layers.
One Los Angeles-specific gotcha: sun exposure. Schluter profiles and edge restraints expand and contract with temperature swings, and a black metal edge strip on a South Bay driveway in August can move more than you’d expect. We account for expansion gaps at install, and when we see a failed edge, it’s almost always one that was butted tight with no room to move.

Signs Your Schluter Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Pavers have drifted outward at the edges. The Schluter edge restraint has lost its anchor or wasn’t installed deep enough. Water gets under the edge, the sand bed washes out, and the perimeter pavers start walking.
- Sand is disappearing from the joints after rain. The jointing compound wasn’t Schluter-compatible or the drainage mat below has clogged, trapping water that pushes the sand up and out through the joints.
- Water pools against the garage slab or foundation. The TROBA or DITRA-DRAIN layer has crushed, torn, or clogged, and water no longer drains to the outlet. In Los Angeles’s wet winters, that standing water finds the slab edge and starts working on it.
- A visible rut or depression in the vehicle path. The drainage mat has compressed permanently, which means the load rating was wrong for the application or the base below it was never compacted to spec. Either way, the pavers have nothing solid under them.
- Edge profile is lifting, cracked, or pulling away from the paver line. Expansion pressure from heat has bent or sheared the profile. Once the edge moves, the whole field starts to shift.
None of these fix themselves. The longer a failing Schluter layer stays in place, the more of the paver field has to come up to repair it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, Schluter driveway and paver replacement runs $8,260 to $21,240 installed, with most full driveways landing between $12,000 and $16,000. The range moves on four things: total square footage, whether the existing pavers can be salvaged and reset, the condition of the compacted base underneath, and which Schluter layer you’re replacing. A TROBA mat swap under a 400-square-foot driveway costs considerably less than a full DITRA-DRAIN retrofit with new edge profiles and rejointing.
Our written price includes the Schluter material, removal of the failed layer, inspection of the base, replacement of any compromised sub-base material, paver reset, edge restraint installation, and jointing compound. It also includes disposal of the old material. What it doesn’t include: surprises. The price we hand you before work starts is the price you pay when the job’s done. That’s The Garrison Standard, in writing, every time. And every completed driveway job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if that paver field fails within a year, we come back and correct it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Pulling up a single paver to look at what’s underneath is something a homeowner can do with a couple of flat pry bars and some patience. If you see a torn drainage mat, a crushed edge profile, or standing water where it shouldn’t be, you’ve found the problem. That diagnosis is useful.
What’s not a DIY job is the repair. Resetting a Schluter drainage layer means pulling the full field, regrading the base, recompacting, and reinstalling the restraint system to Schluter’s specs. Get the slope wrong and water runs toward the house instead of away from it. Get the compaction wrong and you’ll be digging up the same driveway in two years. There’s also a real shoulder-and-back cost to moving hundreds of pavers by hand. Call us at (903) 568-7222 and we’ll come out, give you a straight diagnosis and a written price, and you won’t touch a single paver yourself.
FAQs

A properly installed Schluter drainage layer under a residential paver driveway lasts 20 to 30 years in Los Angeles’s climate, with the pavers themselves often outlasting the base. The failure point is almost always water: once drainage clogs or the edge restraint fails, the system starts degrading. Call (903) 568-7222 for an inspection and an exact assessment of what you have.
Small tears and joint failures can sometimes be patched if the damage is localized to a few square feet and the rest of the layer is sound. If the mat has compressed or the edges have failed around the perimeter, a patch won’t hold. We’ll tell you which one you have, and the diagnosis is free.
Most residential driveway replacements in Los Angeles run 3 to 5 working days, depending on square footage and whether the base needs recompaction. We sequence demolition, base work, membrane installation, and paver reset so the job moves without a day wasted, and the site is clean when we leave it.
We stock Schluter TROBA, TROBA-PLUS, DITRA-DRAIN, edge profiles, and compatible jointing compounds, so most part swaps happen without waiting on a supply house order. If you need a specific profile size we don’t carry, we’ll have it in hand before the job starts and factor that into the written price.
We also stock parts and materials for KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria and Silestone surfaces, and the full Bradford Remodeling brand set. One crew, one written price, one guarantee.
