Therma-Tru Windows & Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Most Therma-Tru window and door repairs in Los Angeles run between $470 and $2,950 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a weatherstrip, a hinge, a sill, or the full sash. We stock the common Therma-Tru wear parts on our trucks and can typically match your model from the label inside the door edge or window track. What usually brings a Los Angeles homeowner to this page is a door that’s suddenly hard to lock, a window that won’t stay up, or daylight visible around a frame that used to seal tight.
Bradford Remodeling is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Therma-Tru, but we install and service their products regularly across Los Angeles because the build quality is consistent and the parts are traceable when you know what to look for.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru builds fiberglass and steel entry doors, plus a line of vinyl and fiberglass windows. The door lines we see most in Los Angeles are the Classic-Craft, Fiber-Classic, and Smooth-Star series. Each has a slightly different hinge spacing and jamb depth, so the first thing we check is the part label or the AAMA certification sticker usually tucked near the hinge side of the slab. If that’s gone, we measure the door thickness, hinge mortise width, and the sweep profile. Those three numbers get us to the right replacement part about nine times out of ten.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha with Therma-Tru specifically: their hinge mortises are not a universal 3.5-by-3.5. Some Classic-Craft slabs use a radius-corner hinge with a narrower leaf than what you’d grab at a big-box store. A generic hinge will bolt in but the door will sag within a season. We install the correct mortise match, OEM or a specified aftermarket equivalent that fits the existing cutout. Same story with sweeps: Smooth-Star series uses a slide-in sweep with a specific kerf width, and the aftermarket ones that claim to be “universal” often leave a 1/16-inch gap that lets dust and ants through. Los Angeles has both.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Windows & Doors Is Failing
- Door won’t latch without lifting the handle. The slab has settled or a hinge leaf is worn. It’s rarely the latch itself. We see this on west-facing doors in Los Angeles where the afternoon sun cooks the strike-side jamb and the reveal changes by a sixteenth of an inch.
- Window sash drops when you let go. The balance system in a double-hung window has lost tension. On Therma-Tru vinyl windows, that’s usually a worn block-and-tackle balance or a stretched spring. It is not a lubrication problem, and the sash will not heal itself.
- Drafts around the door perimeter, especially at the bottom corners. Sweep and weatherstrip compress over time. In Los Angeles, dry air and heat cycles harden the vinyl boot faster than coastal humidity would. Once it’s stiff and cracked, it does not seal.
- Condensation or fog between window panes. The insulated glass unit’s seal has failed. You can clean the exterior glass forever and it won’t clear up, because the haze is inside the IGU. This is a replacement, not a repair.
- Door slab scrapes the threshold on the latch side. The hinge screws have pulled from the jamb or a lower hinge has worn enough to let the slab drop. Fixing the screw holes is straightforward; ignoring it turns a $40 hinge replacement into a jamb repair.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the pricing we write on Brad-form quotes for Therma-Tru work in Los Angeles:
- Weatherstrip / sweep replacement: $95 – $350 installed. This is usually the cheapest fix when the door still operates but leaks air.
- Hinge replacement (set of three): $180 – $470 installed, including re-aligning the slab on existing mortises.
- Window balance replacement (per sash): $145 – $350 per window.
- Threshold and sill replacement: $300 – $825 depending on material and whether the sub-sill needs repair.
- Insulated glass unit replacement (per sash): $450 – $1,400 depending on size and low-E coating.
- Full door slab replacement: $1,800 – $3,900 installed, slab and hardware included.
These are line-item prices. You’ll see the part, the labor, and the time on paper before we start, so there’s no mystery number at the end. And like everything Bradford Remodeling touches in Los Angeles, any Therma-Tru part we install is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work fails within a year, we come back and correct it at no charge. Written down, not implied.

A homeowner can safely check the visible condition of a sweep, weatherstrip, and threshold. Run your fingers along the vinyl to feel for cracks. Look at the hinges for visible sag or backed-out screws. That’s real diagnostic information, and you should know it before anyone quotes you. But the actual replacement gets tricky fast: a Therma-Tru threshold is bedded in sealant over the substrate, and pulling the wrong screw can free the sill anchors. Door slabs weigh more than most people expect, and a dropped Classic-Craft slab will dent a wood floor. Window balances are under tension; pop the wrong side first and the sash can come down on your hand. No exaggeration, that one can draw blood.

FAQs

In the Los Angeles climate, a Therma-Tru entry door slab can go 20 to 30 years if the seals are maintained. The wear parts, sweeps, weatherstrips, hinges, and balances, generally last 5 to 12 years before they need replacement, faster on west-facing exposures where the afternoon heat cycle is hardest on vinyl and compressible materials. Call (903) 568-7222 and we’ll tell you what your specific setup is likely to cost.
Most component failures are repairable: we replace the failed part, not the whole door or window, unless the slab, sash, or jamb has structural damage from water or impact. A fogged insulated glass unit can be swapped without touching the frame. If the only issue is a worn sweep or a tired balance, you are looking at a part replacement, not a full replacement. Call (903) 568-7222 for an exact number on your setup.
Most single-part replacements, a hinge set, a sweep, a balance, a threshold, take 45 minutes to two hours on site. A full door slab swap can run half a day once the slab is in hand. We tell you the time window in writing before the truck shows up.
Our Los Angeles trucks carry the most common Therma-Tru wear parts: sweeps, weatherstrips, hinge sets, and window balances in common sizes. Slabs and custom insulated glass units come from our supplier network, typically three to seven business days out. We also keep parts on hand for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone work for our kitchen and bath clients.
